چکیده

[1] The optical emissions in a large number of bright sprites observed over one storm in 1998 exhibit a relaxation that is closely exponential in time. This feature was unexpected but might be explained by the presence of quasi-constant electric fields over times of several milliseconds, in which case the optical relaxation would be a direct indication of the exponentially changing electron density. The relaxation rates for sprites appear to have an upper bound that is consistent with the dissociative electron attachment rates expected at sprite altitudes. The experimental results are consistent with existing large-scale electrodynamic models of sprites as well as with the streamer mechanism as the underlying physical process for sprite ionization.

Red sprites: Lightning as a fractal antenna

A new and improved model of red sprites is presented. Emphasis is placed in accounting for the puzzling observation of the spatial structure in the red sprite's optical emissions. The model relies upon a horizontal fractal lightning discharge, which generates the EMPs that excites the optical emissions in the lower ionosphere. It is shown that the fractal model may account for the observed spri...

Optical observations geomagnetically conjugate to sprite-producing lightning discharges

Theoretical studies have predicted that large positive cloud-to-ground discharges can trigger a runaway avalanche process of relativistic electrons, forming a geomagnetically trapped electron beam. The beam may undergo pitch angle and energy scattering during its traverse of the Earth’s magnetosphere, with a small percentage of electrons remaining in the loss cone and precipitating in the magne...

Coordinated analysis of delayed sprites with high-speed images and remote electromagnetic fields

[1] Simultaneous measurements of high-altitude optical emissions and magnetic fields produced by sprite-associated lightning discharges enable a close examination of the link between low-altitude lightning processes and high-altitude sprite processes. We report results of the coordinated analysis of high-speed sprite video and wideband magnetic field measurements recorded simultaneously at Yucc...

Plasma irregularities in the D-region ionosphere in association with sprite streamer initiation.

Sprites are spectacular optical emissions in the mesosphere induced by transient lightning electric fields above thunderstorms. Although the streamer nature of sprites has been generally accepted, how these filamentary plasmas are initiated remains a subject of active research. Here we present observational and modelling results showing solid evidence of pre-existing plasma irregularities in as...
